Copyright, Plagiarism, & Fair Use

What are copyright, plagiarism, and fair use?

In this topic, copyright is a law that gives an individual ownership over things that they create. When you are using something that you do not own, you must receive permission to use the items that are copyrighted. There are categories of works that can be protected by copyright laws which includes, paintings, live performances, photographs, movies, music, and software. Copyright owners has the right to authorize other people to do any of the copyrights that are legal. They also have the option and ability to transfer exclusive rights or subdivision of those rights to others but the copyright office does not have forms for the transfers, so they’re usually done through a contract. By assigning the exclusive right to copy and distribute original works to creators, the copyright laws have to ensure that the holders of the copyright can earn income from their work. For instance, authors may sell, rent, or license their own work or give permission to others to use their works and collect the royalties.  It’s best to protect your work from people that would copyright, because if you have an original idea or piece of creative work, no matter what other people may say, it is still a potential asset and it should be treated as such, but your work can end up having considerable value in the future and it can even potentially be used for financial collateral if you protect it. If you have copyrighted work that has attracted the interests of other parties, you can explore your licensing options to make sure you can financially benefit from their use.    https://youtu.be/Uiq42O6rhW4

When you plagiarize, it means that you are taking another person’s work and using it as your own and when you plagiarize, you fail to give credit to the original source. Plagiarism falls into three main categories which includes, using a source’s language without quoting what you put, using information from a source without attribution and paraphrasing a source in a form that strays too close to the original source. When you are plagiarizing, you always make sure that you are clear in your written work that you have borrowed. When you are not sure that you have plagiarized, be sure to check with someone, for instance, your instructor about hoe to acknoeldge sources in your paper, especially since academic discipline has its own conventions. If you write a sentence and 20% of the proteins are harvested through the sentence, the use of compst are due, because even though you rewrote the sentence, it is still considered a form of plagiarsim if the author id not refenced or given credit for their knowledge. If you plagriaize, you can be in loss of a scholarship because plagiarsim is on the level as cheating and it can be penalized by scholarships and financial aid. You can be in the loss of respect because you shows that you can’t make sentences on your own when you are doing any work or essays.    https://youtu.be/vwlm0eTBgo4

The meaning of “Fair use” is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by premitting the unlicenced use of copyright- protected work in certain circumstances but whether a work is considered fair use, it is determined soley by the courts. If a holder of copyright believes your application of their material, it is not fair use because it is within right to bring suit. Fair use do not qualify in the vast majority of cases where works used in the furhterance of a commercial enterprise. When using fair use, it is often use when people show previously created content in order to create historical context for breaking news or toher current events. Documentary filmmakers may rely on fair use when it is including copyrighted material in their work. Another thing about fair use, is that it’s often used for commentary or critism and wihtout fair use, an author or creater would need to ask permission from the copyright holder before using copyrighted content in the process of the critisim.since the copyright holder would probably not likely want to be criticized, that type of situation could lead to  cenorship, but when applicable, fair use often provides the opportunity for freedom of expression when commenting or criticizing the works of others.https://youtu.be/9l21v-c8cA

There are different ways that copyright, plagiarism, and fair use are realated. For instance, if you take someone else’s work and put your name on it, you are committing plagiarism even if you paid for a legal copy of the materials but in addiction, you are limited in the amount and nature of someone else’s work that you can use for your presentations, projects, papers, and reports without asking for their permission even though you might give them credit to the work’s author or owner. When you are using more of someone else’s work than “fair use”allows without their permission, it is a violation of copyright laws and it is possible to violate copyright laws without committing plagiarism and to commit plagiarism without violating the copyright laws, but both of the situations would be considered acts of academic dishonesty under the Penn State’s Academic Integrity policy. https://youtu.be/sEnGlxjaNYk
